RealtimeWAS
The Challenge
In Nepal, over 80% of households are at risk of water contamination, and 140,000 people die annually from waterborne illnesses. Communities in rural areas lack affordable, accurate tools to test and treat their water. Existing solutions were either too expensive, too fragile for field use, or required expert training.
Since 2022, Diyalo Foundation has supported the Phutung Research Institute (PRI) in developing RealtimeWAS — an integrated system for real-time water safety.
What we did
- Developed a Lock-in Amplifier (LIA) signal processor capable of detecting E. coli at 1 part per billion using fluorescence spectroscopy.
- Designed a weatherproof communal tap sensor with instant Safe/Unsafe LED feedback for shared use at village taps.
- Built a first version for an automated water sampler and chlorine dispenser that detects bacteria and injects a precise chlorine dose into rooftop storage tanks.
- Created a V1 web and Android app allowing stakeholders to monitor contamination levels, view historical data, and locate testing devices by location or serial number.
- Created a new design for the embodiment of the device.
- Worked with experts and mentors on developing a full product stack for the venture.
The Outcome
RealtimeWAS will give rural communities a complete, end-to-end water safety system. From detecting contamination at the source to automatically treating it and reporting it digitally, the project replaces expensive lab equipment with affordable, locally deployable technology.
