Nyano Nani Baby Warmer Redesign (2023 Spring)

The Challenge

Hypothermia is a leading cause of neonatal death in Nepal, affecting 85% of newborns. The first Nepalese-made baby warmer, the Nyano Nani, suffered from mechanical failures, poor heat distribution, and a user interface that was difficult for rural nurses to navigate.

Our Solution

TU Delft students designed the Nyano Nani 2.0, which features a 29% more energy-efficient heater and an ergonomic bed height adjusted specifically for the average height of Nepalese women. A dedicated tilting mechanism was also added to help prevent infants from choking during care.

How It Works

Nepal has limited healthcare infrastructure in rural regions. The redesign applied “design for repair” principles, reducing the frame’s assembly to just two standard tools to ensure easier maintenance. The final product is 37% lighter and fits into a single box for transport over rough terrain.

The Outcome

The Nyano Nani 2.0 provides rural health centers with a professional and easy-to-use medical device. By improving heat efficiency and nurse interaction, the project directly helps reduce the high infant mortality rate in Nepal.
